Over the last 150 years we have seen a major alteration in human health. Due largely to increases in hygiene and the reduction in obvious types of malnutrition, combined with advances in vaccination and antibiotics, we saw a vast decrease in disease and death from infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis and pneumonia.
While this has been a boon to humanity, at the same time we have seen a huge increase in what are called variously Western, chronic, or diseases of Civilization.
Over these 150 years a vast change has occurred in the human diet. One of the largest changes has been in the type of fats we consume and the relative quantities of those fats. The Ω Initiative is premised on the idea that this change is what is driving our pandemic of chronic diseases, that “associated” conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, etc. are not merely linked to each other but share a common cause.
As our diet has continued to change with the increase in ultra-processed foods, we have shifted from a diet with a balance of what are called ‘omega fats’, those unsaturated fats that have long been part of a healthy diet, to an unhealthy mix that is driving these chronic diseases which are now our leading causes of death and illness.
The Ω Initiative was created by people who hope to return us to a healthier human diet, one in which what we now term chronic diseases are again rare, by educating people on the science behind these disease so they may alter their own diet; by educating the corporations that produce our food so they may respond to people seeking a healthy diet; and by pressuring regulatory institutions to stop promoting the unhealthy diet which has driven the explosion of chronic disease.
We research, investigate and advocate for appropriate action and education on polyunsaturated lipids.
Our experts have been working on this problem for more than 15 years.
